Ebola

What is Ebola?

Ebola is a dangerous, often-fatal, virus that has so far been confined to Africa — and is fortunately extremely rare. It affects - and is carried by - monkeys and gorillas as well as humans. It spreads via contact with infected blood and bodily secretions— which means carers for victims are especially at risk.

Symptom summary

  • Bleeding from eyes, ears and nose
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bleeding from the mouth and rectum
  • Fever
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache and sore throat

Prevention tips

Mythbusters

  • "Ebola is a threat to human existence…"

It is a nasty alarming disease, yes. But, in reality, the chances of contracting it - as opposed to the flu, which kills far more people - are very small.

  • "It’s only a matter of time before ebola spreads from Africa to around the world…"

Ebola is contagious but it isn’t an airborne virus (it can only be passed on by direct contact with a sufferer or something they’ve touched) so its spread is limited. (Outbreaks also tend to occur in isolated areas far from medical treatment.) Don’t panic — just be aware.
