What is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection - most common in children - that is caused by a virus. Because it’s caused by a virus, there is no specific medical treatment and the illness has to run its course. Measles is spread by direct contact with an infected person — or through breathing in contaminated air.
